Kate and Wills have been lending a hand to a group of schoolkids as they prepare food round a campfire, during a touching royal visit.

The royals got stuck in by cutting branches and whittling wood while meeting pupils taking part in a Forest School in Hereford.

Run by Madley Primary School, children are taught about environmental concerns, conservation and woodland management in an outdoors setting.

The royals got their hands dirty as they took part in skimming bark off logs and then getting handy with a saw to set up a tree den.

Wills and Kate were also gifted books for their children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

A seemingly excited Wills managed to accidentally knock a branch off the den while inspecting it although he managed to fix it straight away.

Kate held down a small log so William, who wore gloves and protective glasses, could saw it in half for a group of youngsters making a den during their woodland class.

But she turned down the offer of a pair of workman's gloves, saying her fingers were "stuck" together, in reference to two of her digits on her right hand being strapped together after she injured them in a trampoline accident.

The couple also sat around a campfire as the children roasted what William dubbed the "healthy version of marshmallows" - pieces of apple dipped in cinnamon and sugar.

The prince told the youngsters "whenever you cook something on a fire, I think it always tastes so much better".

He later sat down with 10-year-old Jake who showed him how to whittle a stick and the royal quipped "hard to whittle when your fingers are quite cold".

They told staff and pupils before they left: “More schools need the opportunity to do things like this.”

Madley Primary School and the Duchy of Cornwall have been partners of the Forest School programme for the past 12 years.

The Duchy supplied the school with a woodland site at Brampton Hill Wood in order to enable the Forest School to take place in Hereford.

Over the years, the woodland area has increased as well as the onsite facilities.

After the visit, the royal couple then went to Kings Pitt Farm to meet Duchy of Cornwall farming tenants, Sam and Emily Stables.

The couple, who have faced their own mental health issues, founded We Are Farming Minds, a charity working to support the mental health of farmers in rural communities around the county.

The initiative offers Herefordshire farmers access to a range of services including counselling, a 24-hour phone and text support line, free mental health awareness workshops and social events throughout the year to break feelings of isolation.

Meanwhile, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry continued their loved up display today as they hugged and held hands at the Invictus Games.
